Lean Construction Institute (LCI) - Nor-Cal Chapter Meeting
May 13, 2009
Join us for lean project definition, planning, and design with David Van Wyk from Disney as he shares how the Disney Imagineers are changing their project delivery model to incorporate lean principles to define, design and build their theme parks.
In 2007, Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) committed to deliver a number of its key Theme Park projects using Integrated Project Delivery. Facing a continuing metric of 25% field change and an increasing amount of owner oversight, these projects have been targeted with the goal of reducing each. WDI quickly realized that with a new delivery new process, unchanged behavior will likely yield the same results. This presentation will provide insight to the evolution of our culture as we move toward IPD. As both the Owner and AE, our challenges extend beyond the traditional building as we look to capture elements from our ride systems and show systems within a highly coordinated digital model.
As Executive Director, Project Management for Walt Disney Imagineering, David oversees design, construction, installation and turnover for projects located in Disney’s Theme Parks. David has been an Imagineer for 30 years working on various projects at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Epcot, Disneyland Paris, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s California Adventure. His work has recently been focused at the California based Disneyland Resort completing Midway Mania, Finding Nemo, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and Space Mountain. Currently David leads two teams working to add and transform Attractions, restaurants, shops and area development to Disney’s California Adventure. One of the featured Attractions is based on Disney’s feature animated film The Little Mermaid. As one of Imagineering’s first projects implementing integrated project delivery, he heads a group of engineers, designers, contractors and construction managers through this new delivery process. Originally from the northeast, David resides in southern California. He is a registered architect and a member of the AIA.
Agenda:
1) Introductions - Welcome to LCI - Nor Cal Chapter
2) Salad Chat: Discuss what you have learned or observed about lean since the April meeting.
3) Introductions – And share your results using lean concepts on projects and in your offices:
A "Lightning Round" Report on lowlights and highlights of any Lean assessments or observations performed in March, your use of 5S, or your site walk looking for waste.
4) Main Speaker: Dave Van Wyk, Disney will continue our 2009 2nd Quarter theme of Lean Project Definition, Planning, and Design discussing how Disney is changing its project delivery model to incorporate lean principles to define, design, and build their theme parks.
5) Questions - Lightning round to share your comments and questions about this topic.
6) Next meeting: June 8th, 2009. Join us for an animated panel discussion summarizing what we have heard from our speakers in April and May with specific examples from multiple projects. The members of the panels will be announced soon. They will represent projects that at some point in the early project phases and are using lean principles in their project definition, planning, and design efforts.
7) Training opportunities – upcoming events
8) Plus / Delta - Feedback to improve each meeting.

NorCal Lean Construction Institute
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
